On the streets
Is Not Magazine is pasted to outdoor poster sites in Melbourne and Sydney for the first two weeks of the two months that the issue is in circulation. Keep your eyes peeled for the latest issue on poster hoardings in inner city areas. There are many sites where you may or may not find it. (Unexpectedly discovering our magazine is the greater part of reading pleasure.)
If you have stumbled upon a copy of Is Not, feel free to send us a photo and we'll add it to our online gallery. Or if perhaps you can think of an existing postered area that you feel would make a good home for the magazine, please contact us.
Off the streets
Step out of the lift on the third floor and there we are! Now turn right and you’re at Metropolis, our major retail partner. It’s the best place in town to get glossy books on art and design, a judicious selection of music, and quirky gifts for that hard-to-buy-for person. And the staff are truly delightful.
Tucked in a laneway off a laneway off Little Collins Street, Pushka is arguably the home of Australia’s smallest art gallery, occasionally the home of Is Not power meetings, and definitely the home of Melbourne’s yummiest bagels. Put a cushion on a milk crate and peruse their collection of vintage National Geographic magazines.
What better place to put a poster-magazine than a Wall? When we’re southside, we always stop in to lounge around the communal table. It used to be a kosher butcher and the scales are still there. We love their pides and their delicious coffee. And now Is Not is in Sydney, we staunch the homesickness with a visit to Wall in Surry Hills.
This hanging potplant jungle is also a hive of technomological sophistication, from free wireless internet to the wondrous Rear Projection Urinal and a massive 180-degree wall of projected images. Horse Bazaar also hosts all manner of experimental media and music events – some presented by Is Not Magazine contributors!
Legendary for its outrageously cheap Tuesday steak nights and Wednesday bingo, the Terminus also has a peaceful beer garden, riotous Indian décor in the loos, a stuffed fox head over the bar, and an upstairs function space. And now Is Not Magazine!
Do your laundry the cool way: with jazz from the sound system, coffee several doors down the road, and a sometimes profound, sometimes puerile visitors book. Plus, they’re putting in a webcam so you can watch your clothes get clean from afar!
Next time you’re heading upstairs from Centre Place, hang a left instead at this tiny cafe that sells much more than juice. For instance, we have spent many happy hours sitting in the tiny outside booths manhandling Jungle Juice’s legendary club sandwich. And in winter, we pretty much live off their homemade soup.
